At first I really wanted to understand how plants and animals exist and how to conserve them. Then I became more interested in plants because they provide a good study system for genetics. I like my current project because I am both learning more about plants and hopefully my results will be put to good use.

If I’m honest, at the start I wanted to help find cures for genetic diseases, and though obviously that is important and one day maybe we’ll be able to do that successfully, I slowly just got more and more interested in trying to understand how things work in general, what makes us ‘us’? Being a scientist means that I’m a the forefront of learning about these things and y’know, I get to learn about new, interesting stuff all the time.

It seemed the most natural way to live, trying to find out how things work
