I’ve been collecting leaf tissue so that I can grind it up and extract DNA. The reason for this is because genetic information (i.e our genes) is controlled by DNA, which is a long string like molecule that is in each cell. The DNA in the entire plant (ie flowers, leaves, roots) is the same its just that it is easier to extract it from leaves (and taking bits of leaf off the plant doesn’t harm it).

Once I’ve extracted the DNA for each plant I can analyse it to see if there are any mutations in the genes that I’m interested in.
