      I receive an education grant of £13,600 per year, tax free, and I don’t have to pay tuition fees. The government pays us these grants to encourage people to do PhDs in scientific research, which will be a benefit to society and the economy. In exchange for this support, we have to spend our time carrying out research to try and improve people’s lives.
