I’ve always had an interest in nature. I was probably a nightmare as a kid as I always wanted to catch every animal (ie snakes, scorpions etc). I find all life beautiful and amazing and really loved studying biology and finding out how plants and animals function. I wasn’t specifically interested in plants when I started training to be a scientist, but the more I have studied them the more I become interested in them. On retrospect I am glad I am studying plants for a few practical reasons: they don’t run away, it is relatively easy to grow them and I don’t feel bad about cutting them up. They do therefore make a good model organism for studying genetics and there have been many key genetic breakthroughs that have been made through studying plants. Mendel comes to mind.
