Barbara McClintock wins my all-time prize (you can read more about her on my profile). She was wrong about a lot of things, but when she was wrong, she was wrong in a new and interesting way that opened up whole new subject areas.
Alfred Sturtevant is another favourite, because he invented the genetic map when he was only 19. He and his supervisor Thomas Hunt Morgan did some amazing work with genes decades before anyone had a clue what they really were or what they were made of.
Of scientists who are still alive, I’d say Tomoko Ohta, a Japanese geneticist who thought up a whole new way of looking at how genes evolve.
Well, I admire sooo many scientists, but I’ve said before that I like Brian Cox a lot, you might of caught him on Wonders of the Solar System, just because he can really bring science alive and he doesn’t fit that usual stereotype of a scientist. Anyone who can make a tin of water exciting gets my vote!
A scientist now working in south africa called Woody Cotterill. He studies the evolution of african animals. I think his work is going to be crucial in conserving southern African ecosystems and is thefore going to save millions of lives. you can read about some of his work at http://www.biodiversityleadershipawards.org/cott1.htm
