What I do: I am identifying the genes that cause lignin synthesis in cereal stems so that we can breed barley varieties that have straw that is easier for animals to digest.

Favourite Thing: Looking at cells beating in a dish. Getting large sheets of numbers or graphs to analyse to see what’s happened in the experiments. Finding out that my prediction was right and that my theory could be true. Or getting a complete surprise from the experiments and finding we need a totally different theory.
What I do: I’m interested in the beating muscle cells (myocytes) of the heart and what happens to them in heart failure

Favourite Thing: Having those little eureka moments when you put together all the bits of experimental data and finally realise what the big picture is.
